Navy Federal checking accounts offer a wide variety of options for you to maximize your military paycheck. When it comes to choosing a checking account, you want a bank or credit union that understands your military service.

Navy Federal Credit Union is the largest military friendly credit union by membership. Navy Federal membership goes beyond current and retired members of the armed forces to include their families and household members, Department of Defense personnel and more.

Zero liability Protection

All Navy Federal Checking Accounts include zero liability protection. This means that you are not responsible for fraudulent charges.

Navy Federal is committed to getting your money back, often on the same day, if your the victim of fraud.

Be careful though because Zero Liability does not cover peer-to-peer services such as SquareCash, Zelle, or Venmo. Make sure you confirm who the money is going to before you click send!

Navy Federal Debit Card

You can freeze/unfreeze your Navy Federal debit card instantly through the website or the Navy Federal app.

This allows you to lock your card and prevent usage of your card if you think it’s lost or stolen. You can unlock your card and start using it again immediately when you find the card or receive a new one.

You can add your Navy Federal debit card to Apple Pay, Samsung Pay, and Google Pay.

No Monthly Service Fees

When I began my journey to financial independence, there was nothing more frustrating than paying monthly service fees on my checking account. Thankfully, with Navy Federal you don't need to worry about monthly service fees.

All Navy Federal checking accounts have no monthly service fees except Navy Federal Flagship Checking. Flagship Checking has a monthly fee if your average daily account balance drops below $1,500.

However, if you keep your balance above $1,500 there is no monthly fee. Plus, the Flagship Checking account pays a higher interest rate than other Navy Federal checking accounts.

Navy Federal ATMs

You can find Navy Federal ATMs at most branches and on many posts or bases. The ATMs are free to use for Navy Federal members. If you're not near a Navy Federal branch, you can use any ATM part of the CO-OP network for free with your Navy Federal Visa® Debit Card or CUCARD®.

Look for the CO-OP symbol below on the ATM to see if you can use it for free. There are over 30,000 CO-OP ATMs around the U.S. and Canada.

Navy Federal Checking Accounts

Navy Federal offers 5 types of checking accounts. Four of the five are free with no monthly service fee, opening deposit requirement, or minimum balance requirement.

  • Free Active Duty Checking
  • Free Easy Checking
  • Free Campus Checking
  • Free EveryDay Checking
  • Flagship Checking

NFCU Flagship Checking is the only Navy Federal checking account with a $10 monthly service fee if your average daily balance is less than $1,500.

If you are a student and eligible for Navy Fed membership, I recommend checking out the free campus checking account.

NFCU Free Active Duty Checking™

One of the primary advantages of the Free Active Duty Checking from Navy Federal is receiving your pay 1 day earlier with direct deposit.

Early pay is a fantastic benefit and allows you to reliably schedule auto payments, auto transfers, and auto investments on the 1st and 15th of the month. You know Navy Federal will be depositing your pay at least 1 business day earlier.

You can also get up to $240 per year in ATM fees reimbursed. Up to $20 of ATM fees are reimbursed per statement period, which is usually about 1 month.

No monthly service fee and no minimum balance requirement make this a great account to direct deposit your military paycheck.

Free Campus Checking

This is my recommended account for military cadets and midshipmen at college, university, or one of the military Academies.

Free Campus Checking provides convenient banking for members ages 14-24, with ATM fee rebates and no service fees.

Flagship Checking

Navy Federal Flagship Checking is great if you have a higher balance in your checking account. It pays higher interest rates than the other Navy Federal checking accounts.

You also get ATM fee rebates up to $120 per year or $10 per statement period if you have direct deposit set up.

There's no monthly service fee if the average daily balance is $1,500 or more. The monthly service fee is $10 if your account's average daily balance drops below $1,500.
