Navy Federal cards are an excellent place to start your military credit cards journey. Building credit with an NFCU credit card can make it much easier to access the premium luxury travel cards like the Chase Sapphire Reserve.

Since this card has no foreign transaction fees, it makes a great Amex card to have if you are stationed overseas in Germany, Japan, England, or South Korea.

For a no annual fee card, the NFCU More Rewards Amex card has a good welcome bonus. You can earn 25,000 points when you spend $3000 within 90 days of account opening. These points can be redeemed for cash back, statement credit, travel, or gift cards.

You can deposit the cash back at 1 point = 1 penny or 100 points = $1 into your Navy Federal savings account. Since the points have a fixed value, they are not very useful for optimized military credit card spending. However, if you have maxed out your and your spouse's Chase cards and Amex cards, it may be a good time to try the More Rewards American Express.

More Rewards Amex Card Spending Bonus Categories

This Navy Federal Amex card earns 3x points on restaurants (including food delivery), supermarkets, gas, and transit.

Earning essentially 3% cash back on restaurants, food delivery, supermarkets, gas, and transit make this a very good cash back credit card.

The Navy Federal More Rewards Amex transit category includes railway, ferries/water trip, taxis, limousines, bus lines, charters, tour buses, tolls, road/bridge fees, and parking/lots.

The More Rewards Amex card compares to the Chase Sapphire Reserve and the American Express® Gold Card. However, since Chase points and Amex points are much more valuable and flexible than cash reward points, I suggest you go with a better card like the Amex Gold.

Card Conclusion

This is not the first card I would recommend for military servicemembers.

That being said, if you are just establishing your credit score (less than a 720 score) then a no annual fee Navy Federal More Rewards American Express card is perfect for you to earn a valuable welcome bonus before you move on to the much better military credit cards available. I recommend you learn more about military credit cards in my free course. It only takes 5 days to learn everything you need to get started.

  1. It wasn’t clear on what type of points they are (i.e. NF particular points or AMEX points). I assume NF points due to your comments on fixed value and not that useful?
