I have contacted Capital One to explain their MLA policy for accounts opened after active duty start, but no response so far.

For example, if you are a:

  • ROTC cadet or midshipmen
  • Military Academy cadet or Midshipmen: West Point, Naval Academy, or Air Force Academy cadet
  • Or about to enlist in the military
  • National Guard or Reserves about to go on 30+ day active orders

Then you should be able to open the card, apply for SCRA benefits, and get your annual fees waived while your on active duty and at least a year or two afterwards. Check the comments below for recent data points.

American Express waives annual fees for military and Chase cards like the Chase Sapphire Reserve waive the annual fees for military servicemembers and military spouses.

How To Apply for the Capital One Venture X Card

I applied for the Venture X card as soon as it was released in November 2021. I have over 29 credit cards, so I was a little concerned that I would not be eligible for the card. You can check credit card application rules here.

However, I was instantly approved! You can check if you will be approved at our partner's secure site: Capital One Venture X Rewards Card.

You can see my approval page below. The credit line they offered me was a huge $30,000.

Capital One does not publish any official restrictions. In general it seems that you can apply and be approved for 1 Capital One card every 6 months and can have a maximum of 2 personal Capital One cards. However, there are lots of data points conflicting with those rules now, so I would go ahead and apply and see if you get approved anyways.

You should be able to open a Capital One Venture X even if you already have the Capital One Venture card.

Capital One SCRA

You can apply for Capital One SCRA benefits on the Capital One military website. The application requires several easy pieces of information: name, phone number, date of birth, Social Security Number, and address.

Capital One will run your Social Security Number against the Defense Manpower SCRA database located here. If there is a positive match, they will compare the active duty start date in the database against the date you opened your Venture X card.

If you opened your Venture X Card before you joined active duty, your annual fees should be waived. However, I don't have a lot of datapoints on this, so please leave a comment or contact me if you have successfully had your Capital One credit card annual fees waived with SCRA.

The Capital One Venture X early spend bonus is a massive 75,000 miles when you spend $4,000 in the first 3 months of account opening.

This is one of those blockbuster welcome offers that Chase Sapphire Preferred sometimes offers and the Amex Platinum almost always offers.

Capital One Venture X Transfer Partners

Capital One Venture X miles transfer at a 1:1 ratio for most of the Capital One transfer partners. This is a welcome and recent change as of October 2021.

What To Do With 75,000 Capital One Miles

Capital One miles are becoming some of the most flexible points around. They are nearly equivalent to American Express Membership Rewards points or Chase Ultimate Rewards points.

Thanks to the recent 2021 increase of Capital One transfer ratio to travel partners, Capital One miles can be extremely valuable for booking very expensive first or business class travel on the best airlines in the world: Emirates, Etihad, Cathay Pacific, and Singapore.

Capital One Venture X Annual Fee

The Capital One Venture X is a top tier travel rewards card. The Venture X card easily fits in the same category as the Amex Platinum card and Chase Sapphire Reserve. However, the annual fee is extremely manageable because of the $300 travel credit and the 10,000 miles annual card anniversary bonus.

The annual fee for Venture X is $395, but substract the $300 travel credit and the $100 worth of anniversary miles (10,000 miles) and you get an annual fee of $-5.

Venture X Spending Bonus Categories

Like lots of travel reward cards, this card offers extra miles for spending in travel categories.

  • 10X miles on hotels and rental cars booked through Capital One Travel
  • 5X miles on flights and vacation rentals booked through Capital One Travel
  • 2X miles on all other purchases.
  • Redeem miles for any airline, any hotel, rental cars, and more.
  • Transfer your miles to your choice of 15+ travel loyalty programs (see Capital One Transfer Partners)

Capital One Venture X Travel Credit

The Venture X $300 Travel credit refreshes every card anniversary, not calendar year. So note when you opened the card.

Capital One Venture X Lounge Access

Capital One Lounges are currently in:

  • IAD Dulles Washington DC – Main terminal after TSA PreCheck, opening 2022
  • DFW Dallas Fort Worth International – Terminal D, Gate 22
  • DEN Denver, Colorado – Concourse A, Mezzanine level, opening 2022

Capital One Lounges look like a welcome addition to the airport lounge scene. I think they will easily rival the American Express Centurion Lounges you get access to with your Amex Platinum card.

With a Venture X card you gain unlimited access to Capital One Lounges and up to 2 guest passes. Authorized users on the same card account also get the same privileges, so this is great for large families with kids.

Capital One Venture X Benefits

The Venture X has some solid baked in insurance products such as purchase Protection, car rentals, travel, and cell phone coverage.

Other benefits include an up to $120 statement credit for TSA PreCheck or Global Entry. Military servicemembers should get Global Entry, as anyone on active duty already get TSA PreCheck for free.

Venture X Additional Cardholders

You can add additional cardholders to your Venture X card for no annual fee. This is unlike the Amex Platinum card or Chase Sapphire Reserve, which have additional cardholder fees. However, those fees are waived for active duty military and their civilian spouses.

Capital One Mobile App

Compared to the Chase and Amex app, I have been really impressed with Capital One's mobile app for Android and iPhone. It has an easy feature built in to track your welcome bonus spending in the first six months. It also shows when you need to have your spending done, which is much better than playing guessing games with Chase or Amex.

Frequently Asked Questions about the Venture X

Is the Capital One Venture X worth it?

The Venture X annual fee is $395 but the card comes with a $300 annual travel credit in the Capital One travel portal and a 10,000 miles card anniversary bonus. To me that effectively drops the annual to -$5, since the 10,000 miles are worth at least $100 in travel credit.

What is the highest credit limit for Capital One Venture X?

$30,000 is the highest limit for the Capital One Venture X on approval since it is a Visa Infinite product.

Is the Capital One Venture X metal?

Yes! The Capital One Venture X is a heavy metal card like the Amex Platinum or Chase Sapphire Reserve.

Does the Capital One Venture X card waive annual fees for military?

Capital One may waive annual fees if you open the card before joining active duty. If you open the card while on active duty, the fees are not usually waived. However, the travel credit and 10k bonus miles effectively knock the annual fee down to -$5.

  1. My husband is about to re-enlist . Do you think capital one will waive the Venture X annual fee if we show them the new orders ?

    Reply
    • Yes, check SCRA database before and after active duty start. Make sure you establish the account before orders start.

  2. I am in the Army Reserves and I had a deployment coming up. I applied for the Venture X a week before I deployed. Then the second day I was on active duty I called and applied for SCRA benefits. The refunded my fee the very next day. I was shocked that it happened so fast.

    • Great data point, thank you. Pleasantly surprised they were so quick with the refund. Capital One Venture X is a great card for ROTC, Academy, or someone about to enlist who’s interested in getting the SCRA fee waived benefit. Also, great for Guard and Reservists with 30+ day active orders coming up.

  3. I have the Venture card before active duty, so they waived the $95 fee. If I upgrade this card to Venture X (I know I lose out on the SUB), will they waive the $395 fee?

    Reply
    • Yes, I think the annual fee will be waived because the SCRA benefits are applied to this specific account and if you upgrade to a Venture X card the SCRA benefits will contribute to apply. However, I don’t know. So be the data point you want to see!

It could be worth losing out on the welcome bonus offer to get the $300 annual travel credit for no annual fee.

  4. Hi Spencer,
Do you know if the $300 travel credit can be used just like the travel credit of Chase Sapphire Reserve or we have to book travel thru Capital One only?

    Reply
    • Capital One Venture X travel credit must be booked through Capital One travel portal. So it’s easy to use but not as easy to use as Chase Sapphire Reserve travel credit, which is good for any travel purchase on the card, and doesn’t need to be through the Chase travel portal.

      Reply
    • Latest data points I have is they are still only waiving annual fees if the account was opened prior to active duty under SCRA.

  5. Hello,

So I recently left active duty and became an AGR in the reserves in March and was wondering if there is a window where you still qualify for SCRA benefits after you have joined/re-joined. I still have SCRA benefits on my capital one cards I got from when I first joined active duty, and I’d love to add this card to my collection.

    Reply
    • Yes this should work! But I haven’t tried it yet so your experience may vary. But since you’ve left active duty, I would open a Venture X card, and then when you re-activate I would apply for SCRA benefits on the card you opened before you activated. You should get a fee waiver and get SCRA benefits applied to your new Capital One Venture X card.

  6. I don’t have 29 credit cards, probably about 15. 780-823 credit scores across all three credit bureaus. However, I didn’t get approved. Capital One’s response, was that I had too many revolving accounts. I also have a capital one checking account, that didn’t help. If you don’t mind, how did you get approved, or what do you think helped you? Thanks in advance.
