American Express announced limited time benefits for many of their cards due to the ongoing coronavirus travel freeze. Travel credits, hotel and resort credits, free airport lounge access, and upgraded statuses are great if you're traveling – but hardly anyone is travelling at the moment.

Most of these limited time Amex COVID benefits start 1 May 2020 and run for a few months or until the end of 2020. Highlights include $20 streaming credits, $20 cell phone bill credits, and $250-$300 restaurant credits. Take advantage of these limited benefits now and save some money over the next few months.

Note that you do not need to enroll for any of these benefits. They are being automatically added to your card. You might need to switch what card you pay certain things from. I switched my Netflix, cell phone plan, Audible, and Amazon Prime video payment method to the Amex Platinum to take advantage of the $20 per month benefits.

The Platinum card also give members $15 of Uber credits that can be used for Uber Eats. I get $90 of Uber credits every month thanks to my multiple Amex Platinum cards.

You should receive an email with the subject: “Important news about your Platinum Card®” to ensure you are eligible for these limited time Amex benefits.

Here is my Amex streaming and wireless credits when they posted to my account for Amazon Prime Video purchase (Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King) and Google Fi.

  • Eligible purchases at U.S. restaurants, including takeout and delivery, will now qualify toward the $300 Marriott Bonvoy statement credit benefit from 1 June through 31 August 2020. Normally you must use this credit at a Marriott property.

The $300 restaurant credit on the Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant American Express card makes this one a winner! Between my wife and I we have 3 of Bonvoy Brilliants plus 3 Hilton Aspire cards.

Amex Hilton Honors Aspire Card

Free Diamond Status at Hilton Hotels for Military

Many Hilton Honors Aspire Card from American Express cardholders received an email with the information below in early May 2020.

  • From 1 May to 31 July 2020 earn 12 Hilton Honors points for every $1 spent at U.S. supermarkets
  • Free weekend night rewards issued through Dec 31 2020 can now be used any night of the week and any award issued from 1 May to 31 Dec 2020 will be valid for 24 months rather than 12 months
  • Unused $250 Hilton Resort statement credit can be applied to US restaurant purchases, including takeout and delivery, from 1 June to 31 Aug 2020

The $250 Hilton Resort statement credit can be used for all U.S. restaurant purchaes from 1 June to 31 August 2020. You can still use the benefit for eligible purchases at participating Hilton Resorts during this time.

Amex does not clearly define U.S. restaurants, but assume anywhere in the United States you buy prepared food, either sit down, takeaway, or delivery as a US restaurant. Amex does define what a US restaurant is NOT:

You also will NOT earn additional rewards at bars, nightclubs, convenience stores, supermarkets, grocery stores, cafeterias, caterers, theatre clubs, breweries, bakeries and meeting venues.

You may not earn additional rewards at a restaurant located within another establishment (e.g. a restaurant inside a hotel, casino, event venue, food court, or campus building). For example, purchases made at a restaurant located within a hotel may be recognized as a purchase at a hotel, not a restaurant.

Amex retail definitions

Note that even though breweries and bars don't count, usually microbreweries that serve food alongside beer or other alcoholic beverages codes as a restaurant.

Points earned through purchases on all Hilton American Express Cards, that post to the Card Member’s Hilton Honors account between May 1 to December 31, 2020 are considered “Base Points” and will count towards Elite tier qualification and Lifetime Diamond Status. This is a nice benefit if you are trying to earn a higher tier status, but not relevant if you have the Amex Hilton Aspire card, as it has automatic Diamond status.

For my Amex Platinum streaming credit for an Amazon Prime movie, it took 2 days for the credit to post to my account. Amex Terms and Conditions say it could take 2-4 weeks for the statement credits to post, but it seems to happen much quicker than that.

How long do the Amex Platinum wireless credits take to post?

It took 4 days for my Amex Platinum wireless credits to post to my account. I paid my Google Fi bill, which happened to be $20. I received

  1. Hi Spencer,

We noticed on the AmEx email we received about our Delta Reserve that they were offering a one time $100 statement credit after renewal. Do you know if this applies to service members whose fees are waived?

Also, for the restaurant credit on the hotel specific-cards, is there a list to reference as to which US restaurants qualify? Is it just automatic?

    Thank you.

    • It is unlikely that the one time $100 statement credit after renewal will be offered to those with annual fee waived cards. You’re already not paying an annual fee, so there’s no point in offering a credit to keep the account open. If Amex does pay miltiary servicemembers a renewal statement credit, all the better. But I doubt it will happen.

For the Amex hotel cards with a US restaurant benefit, the credit is automatic. Amex is not very clear what counts as a restaurant, but they do define what does not count and what may not count on their retail definitions page.
